Breakthrough: DCI Arrests Key Suspect in Murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were
A major breakthrough has been made in the investigation into the tragic murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP), Charles Ong’ondo Were. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a key suspect believed to be directly involved in the brutal killing. The suspect was arrested in a coordinated operation carried out in Nairobi on Sunday morning.
Alongside the arrest, authorities also seized a vehicle believed to have been used during the suspect’s escape. The vehicle in question had been under surveillance after being identified in footage obtained from multiple security cameras around the central business district. Investigators had traced its movement across several key areas, including Parliament Buildings, City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Jakaya Kikwete Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, and Valley Road. The car’s movements coincided with those of the MP’s vehicle on the night of the murder.
The arrest represents a significant step forward in a case that has gripped the nation and raised serious concerns about the safety of public officials. DCI officers are also actively pursuing a second suspect, believed to be an accomplice in the killing. This individual remains at large, and law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to bring him to justice.
The murder of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were occurred on the evening of Wednesday, during what appeared to be a calculated and well-planned assassination. The MP was fatally shot while waiting at a traffic light along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout. The attack was carried out by a gunman riding a motorcycle, who approached the MP’s vehicle and opened fire at close range.
Preliminary investigations and CCTV footage have provided a chilling account of the events leading up to the assassination. According to the footage, MP Were left Parliament Buildings at approximately 7:00 PM. He was accompanied by his bodyguard and driver. The group proceeded along City Hall Way and eventually turned onto Wabera Street.
While on Wabera Street, surveillance cameras captured an unidentified individual wearing a hoodie and carrying a bag. The man appeared to be monitoring the MP’s car as it slowed down. During this time, the MP’s bodyguard exited the vehicle to carry out a financial transaction at a nearby M-Pesa shop. Reports indicate that he deposited Ksh 20,000 on behalf of the MP.

Following the stop at Wabera Street, the MP’s team attempted to navigate Nairobi’s congested roads. They initially headed towards Kenyatta Avenue but later diverted through Ralph Bunche Road in an effort to avoid traffic. The vehicle was later spotted on Argwings Kodhek Road and eventually at Valley Road.
It was at this final location—Valley Road—where the fatal attack occurred. As the MP’s vehicle halted at a red light, a motorcycle that had been trailing the car came to a stop nearby. The assailant then dismounted the bike, approached the MP’s window, and shot him four times at close range. The bullets struck the MP in the chest and hands. Despite the presence of a bodyguard and driver, the MP succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The murder has sparked widespread outrage and mourning across the country, particularly among the residents of Kasipul constituency, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their representative. Colleagues in Parliament have also expressed their sorrow and called for swift justice. Many have demanded increased protection for elected officials, especially given the boldness with which this attack was executed in a public and heavily monitored area.
DCI detectives are continuing their investigations with the aim of piecing together the full sequence of events and identifying all individuals involved. Sources close to the investigation suggest that the motive for the killing is still unclear, but various leads are being pursued, including possible political or personal vendettas.
The arrest of the primary suspect is expected to shed more light on the planning and coordination of the assassination. Investigators believe that multiple individuals may have been involved, either in reconnaissance, logistics, or the execution of the attack. The recovered vehicle is now a critical piece of evidence, as forensic experts analyze it for fingerprints, DNA samples, and other traces that may point to additional perpetrators.
As the investigation progresses, security agencies have called on the public to assist by providing any information that may help apprehend the remaining suspect. Meanwhile, the government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that justice is served swiftly and that such a heinous act does not go unpunished.
The late MP Charles Ong’ondo Were was known for his active engagement in national issues and his dedication to serving the people of Kasipul. His sudden and violent death has left a void not only in his constituency but also in the national political landscape. As the country mourns, the call for justice remains loud and unwavering.
