Brace for Rain: Kenya Met Issues 7-Day Alert for Nairobi, Kisumu
The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast a decline in rainfall across most parts of the country between April 29 and May 5. Only select regions are expected to experience light to moderate showers, while others will face sunny conditions, high daytime temperatures, and notably chilly nights.
General Weather Conditions
According to the weatherman, temperatures in certain areas are set to rise significantly. Daytime highs exceeding 30°C are predicted in Northeastern, Northwestern, and Coastal Kenya, along with isolated parts of Western Kenya and the Southeastern lowlands. At the same time, some regions will experience uncomfortably cold nights. Temperatures are expected to dip below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region.
Quoting the department’s advisory: “Residents are urged to take necessary precautions due to these changing weather conditions, particularly where temperatures are extreme or rainfall is intense.”

Rainfall this week is likely to be scattered, with fewer areas receiving significant amounts compared to the previous week. Here is a breakdown of the regional forecasts:

Counties affected include:
Lamu, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, and some parts of Tana River.
5. South-eastern Lowlands
This area will generally experience sunny intervals throughout the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. However, afternoon and nighttime showers are anticipated in a few areas.
Counties covered:
Inland Tana River, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Kitui, and Machakos.
6. North-eastern Kenya

Rainfall in the Previous Week (April 22–28)
While the upcoming week signals a reduction in rainfall, the week prior saw widespread precipitation across multiple regions of the country. The Central Highlands, including Nairobi, recorded heavy rains in some areas. Other regions that experienced significant rainfall included:
- Western Kenya
- Lake Victoria Basin
- Southeastern Lowlands
- Central and Southern Rift Valley
- Parts of North-eastern Kenya
These showers were described by the meteorological department as “isolated but intense,” especially in localized areas. The wet conditions also caused nighttime temperatures to fall below 10°C in elevated regions, particularly across the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the areas surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Weather Implications and Safety Advisory
With the change in weather patterns—marked by a reduction in rainfall and temperature extremes—the Kenya Meteorological Department urges residents to stay informed through reliable weather updates. Those living in regions with potential cold nights or heavy showers should take appropriate measures to safeguard their health, property, and travel plans.
Outdoor activities, farming schedules, and travel logistics may all be impacted depending on regional variations in weather. As such, the department reiterates: “Timely preparedness can help communities adapt and minimize disruptions.”
In Summary
Kenya will experience a notable shift in weather between April 29 and May 5. Rainfall will become less frequent, although some areas will still receive scattered showers and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected in the northeastern and coastal regions, while cold nights will affect parts of the central highlands and rift valley.
Staying informed and taking early precautions remains vital for households, farmers, and travelers across the country.
