The 2027 General Election could witness a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape, as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has recently hinted at a possible presidential bid, potentially alongside his Kiharu counterpart, Ndindi Nyoro.

During an appearance on a breakfast show on Hot 96, Babu revealed that he has been receiving significant encouragement from his supporters to vie for the presidency. This revelation adds a new layer to the already intriguing political developments leading up to the next election.

Babu Owino, who has been a prominent political figure for years, pointed out that his experience as a leader stretches back to his days as a student leader at the University of Nairobi. He believes that this extensive background, coupled with his deep understanding of the issues facing the country, qualifies him to step into the role of president. Babu emphasized that his leadership journey has equipped him with the necessary skills and insights to tackle Kenya’s most pressing challenges.

He also took the opportunity to praise his potential running mate, Ndindi Nyoro. Despite Nyoro’s recent removal from the influential position of chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Babu spoke highly of his Kiharu counterpart.

According to Babu, Nyoro is a “performer” and a capable leader who could become a formidable partner in the race for the presidency.

“It depends on how we decide with my brother, Ndindi. He is a performer, and if today we decide to run for the presidency, we will win very early in the morning without even paying agents,” Babu stated confidently, suggesting that their combined political strength could significantly impact the race.

Babu Owino’s motivation for considering a run for the presidency is rooted in his belief that Kenya, like many other nations, can benefit from the leadership of younger individuals. Drawing inspiration from his contemporaries across the world, Babu pointed to Burkina Faso, where his ally Ibrahim Traore has demonstrated that young leaders can successfully take on the responsibility of governance. Babu expressed admiration for the way young leaders are reshaping political systems globally and believes Kenya could benefit from similar leadership.

Moreover, Babu has been critical of President William Ruto’s administration. He voiced his disappointment in Ruto, stating that the current president has failed to live up to the expectations that many Kenyans had when he was elected in 2022.

Babu argued that Ruto’s leadership has faltered, citing issues like overtaxation and the rising cost of living, which have negatively impacted the everyday lives of Kenyans.

“I am genuinely disappointed because this is the president who ought to have been the best President of Kenya, having come from a very humble background,” Babu remarked. “When he won in 2022, I thought he had already won 2027. But as we approach 2027, he is losing support due to issues like overtaxation and the high cost of living. Kenyans are feeling the pinch, and this will play a key role in the upcoming election.”

As he contemplates his own political future, Babu also took the time to consider possible allies. He mentioned several prominent leaders who could potentially join forces with him in the 2027 election. Among those he named were veteran politicians such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, Eugene Wamalwa, Gladys Wanga, Irungu Kang’ata, and George Natembeya.

Babu suggested that these leaders could play a crucial role in strengthening his bid and ensuring that the voices of various regions and political ideologies are represented.

The possibility of a joint presidential bid between Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro adds an exciting dimension to the 2027 race, which promises to be highly competitive. With Babu’s youthful energy, combined with Nyoro’s political acumen, they could present a formidable challenge to the more established political figures in the country.

However, as with any political race, much will depend on how their strategies evolve and whether they can garner widespread support across Kenya’s diverse electorate.

The next few years will likely see increased political maneuvering, with potential candidates fine-tuning their platforms and alliances. As the 2027 election draws closer, it remains to be seen whether Babu Owino’s presidential ambitions will come to fruition and if a partnership with Ndindi Nyoro could become a powerful force in the country’s political future.
