Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sharply criticized the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of Trans Nzoia County for hosting an extravagant welcome ceremony for Governor George Natembeya.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, May 26, 2025, Senator Cherargei described the MCAs’ actions as a “national embarrassment,” questioning why they would lavishly celebrate the governor amid serious corruption allegations against him.

Senator Cherargei argued that instead of honoring Governor Natembeya, the MCAs should be initiating impeachment proceedings due to his alleged involvement in corruption and poor governance, which he says have led to underdevelopment in Trans Nzoia County.

“The Trans Nzoia County MCAs are a national embarrassment; instead of beginning impeachment proceedings against Governor Natembeya over poor development, corruption and poor governance, they are busy rolling out the red carpet for him,” Cherargei stated.

He further warned that the country must choose between enforcing constitutional accountability or normalizing corruption, urging Kenyans to uphold integrity and reject misconduct. “As a country, we must choose either to use constitutional accountability mechanisms OR normalise corruption. Tunasema Tawe Kapisa,” he emphasized.

The senator’s comments came in response to a lavish welcome held at Kisumu International Airport as Governor Natembeya embarked on a homecoming tour starting in Kitale. The governor’s visit spanned multiple towns across Western Kenya, including Luanda in Vihiga County, Chavakali, Kakamega, Malava, Webuye, Bungoma, and Kitale, where he was greeted by enthusiastic crowds.

This reception followed Natembeya’s recent arrest by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on charges of conflict of interest and corruption involving sums exceeding Ksh3 million. The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court granted him bail on May 20, 2025, while barring him from accessing his office for 60 days and prohibiting interference with witnesses. The case is set for mention on June 4, 2025.

Senator Cherargei’s condemnation underscores rising tensions around governance and accountability in Trans Nzoia, reflecting broader national debates on corruption and political responsibility. The unfolding legal and political developments remain closely monitored by Kenyans and stakeholders alike.
