ODM Unrest Grows as Raila Asks Sifuna to Soften His Tough Criticism of Ruto’s Government

ODM party leader Raila Odinga has addressed recent remarks made by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna regarding President William Ruto’s government. Sifuna, who also serves as ODM’s Secretary General, has consistently opposed aligning with the Kenya Kwanza administration, despite an existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining a cooperative framework between ODM and the ruling UDA party.

Sifuna’s firm position has caused discomfort among a faction within ODM that supports engagement with Ruto’s government. However, speaking during the funeral of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were in Homa Bay County on Friday, May 9, Raila clarified that Sifuna’s statements represent the official stance of the party.

Raila emphasized that, as Secretary General, Sifuna is ODM’s official spokesperson and is authorized to articulate the party’s positions. He stated that internal differences of opinion are natural within any political party, but that ultimately, the party must have a clear and unified position communicated through the appropriate channels.

“As members of ODM, we must remain steadfast and committed to building a strong, unified party. While divergent views are inevitable, the party must have an official position. That position is communicated by the Secretary General. When Sifuna speaks, he does so on behalf of the party,” Raila stated.

He affirmed the existence of an MoU with Kenya Kwanza, which outlines a 10-point agenda aimed at addressing key national issues. Despite this cooperation, Raila reiterated that ODM is not formally part of the government. He clarified that the partnership is limited to resolving specific issues affecting Kenyans.

However, Raila advised Sifuna to temper his tone when expressing criticism. He suggested that while strong positions are acceptable, excessive harshness may be counterproductive.

Raila’s comments followed recent remarks by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u, who also urged Sifuna to soften his criticisms, particularly against former ODM members now serving in government roles.

John Mbadi, also present at the funeral, reinforced this sentiment. Despite his appointment to government, Mbadi confirmed his continued membership in ODM. He argued that the party would benefit more if its members supported those working within the government structure, rather than condemning them.

In summary, Raila Odinga backed Sifuna’s authority to speak for ODM but called for more measured criticism, underscoring the importance of party unity and strategic cooperation.
