Martha Karua Criticizes Ruto for Using Uhuru’s Image for Political Gain
PLP leader Martha Karua has hit out at President Ruto for trying to fake unity with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking on Kameme TV on Monday, August 4, 2025, Karua accused Ruto of using Uhuru’s recent visit to State House to deceive the public. She took issue with political exploitation of a retired President’s image.
Uhuru Deserves Respect
“Uhuru should be given his respect like a former Head of State,” Karua said during the interview. She said the opposition has no intention of using him as a “shield in a war.”
Karua said Uhuru deserves peace and privacy after serving the country. “We haven’t lacked ways to talk to him, because when a person grows old, there is a respect he is given under his position as a retired President,” she added.
According to Karua, involving Uhuru in active politics sets a bad precedent. “Uhuru shouldn’t be dragged into the day to day politics of this country. He should be left to rest,” she said.
On Recent Political Moves
Karua’s remarks come after President Ruto and his allies interpreted Uhuru’s visit to State House during a virtual international meeting as a sign of political alliance ahead of 2027 elections. They said the joint appearance meant Uhuru and Ruto were back together.
Karua dismissed this. “Like now I saw Ruto attaching himself to Uhuru so that Kenyans can see that he and Uhuru are together.”
She accused Ruto of trying to manipulate public opinion. “Because he has seen his government is collapsing like a house of cards,” she said.
Karua concluded by urging leaders to be decent when dealing with former Presidents, saying using them for political games is poor leadership.
